FAQ's
Q: Who can participate in the Jr. Raiders Program?
A: The Jr. Raiders program is open to all students who attend and/or reside within the boundaries of the Wauwatosa East Public School District.
Q: When are practices or games held?
A: In the Summer your daughter will play two games one day per week and have no practices once the league starts. There will be some skill sessions beginning in May and practices for 4th graders but those end once the league starts. Winter practices begin in October and are usually once/week until November when they move to twice/week. They are all held during the week after school hourse. Winter league and tournament games are will occur on Saturday and/or Sunday.
Q: What should my child wear?
A: Proper gym attire should be worn at all times, including shorts or sweatpants, t-shirt and athletic shoes. Shoes do not have to be for basketball only. Please do not wear outdoor shoes on the gym floors! Change into your shoes worn for basketball after you enter the building and before playing on the gym floors.
Q: How do I size my child for their uniform? When does my child receive their team uniform?
A: There will be a sizing day after tryouts. Once you determine the correct uniform size, you can go to the online portal to order it. You pay us for the uniform, but there will be optional items to puchase via the portal, such as a shooting shirt and backpack. The uniform is yours to keep. Uniforms will be handed out prior to the first scheduled game.
Q: Are there a limited number of spots in the program and are there tryouts?
A: We focus on team rosters of no more than 10-12 in 3rd and 4th grade. We focus on creating 2 teams per grade level, but may create additional teams if interest is high enough during these years. 5th - 8th grade teams will be split into A and B teams with 2 teams per grade if numbers allow. A team rosters at capped at 10 and B team rosters are 10-12.
Q: How are teams selected?
A: Players are evaluated after tryouts and then placed on a roster. Evaluators are generally club directors, board members, and high school coaches, with team coaches usually present to provide additional information. Player abilities and skills are evaluated to make the teams as even and equitable as possible in 3rd and 4th grade. In 5th - 8th grade teams are divided into A and B teams. We do not group players by grade school and we generally don't take special requests into consideration.
Q: What can we expect from the Jr. Raider Program?
A: The Junior Raider program was created to build a strong and vibrant Wauwatosa East Girls Basketball program. The focus will be on teaching players the fundamentals of basketball and team play. The girls will learn the skills and mindset to be a competitive basketball player. Older players will learn the some of the Varsity offenses, defenses, concepts and principles.
Q: Who coaches the teams and works with the kids?
A: We need parent coaches to volunteer to coach the teams. In addition, there are staff members assisting the coaches and coordinating the schedules.
